🍪 Everyone hates Siri

Good morning, friends. This is Bite Sized Beta. We’re like your weekly tech cold plunge: the morning habit you do for 3 min but brag to all your friends about.

Cause does it really count if you're not posting about it on Twitter? ;)

We've got a lot on deck for ya today, so let's dive in.

In the oven this week:

  • 🫖 Spilling the tea at Apple

  • 🗳️ Poll of the week: who’s the favorite voice assistant?

  • 🍪 Cookie crumbs: 5 bite-sized headlines

  • 🍫 Chocolate chips: our 3 favorite finds for the week

  • 😂 Snickerdoodles: Thursday memery

WHAT'S WRONG WITH SIRI

At Apple, they’re playing episodes of Everyone Loves Raymond, except instead of Raymond it’s Siri, and instead of love, it’s hate.

A damning report came out this week on Apple and dropped some revealing bombs.

Did we pay the paywall just to get you the tea?

You know it.

Here’s what we’ve learned:

  • TLDR: pretty much everyone at Apple hates Siri because it sucks and has continued to suck over the years. Amen brothas.

  • It hasn’t improved much because of “organizational dysfunction and a lack of ambition.” Aka, total management chaos. There’s a big fear that Siri will say something unhinged, and the swirl is so bad at the exec level that employees are jumping ship out of frustration.

  • Apple’s mixed reality headset team hates Siri so much they even tried building a separate Siri alternative

  • Given Siri’s progress, employees are now skeptical that Apple will ever be an AI leader because they don't have the stomach for mistakes and embarrassing headlines like the rest of big tech

What’s this mean for us? Well it definitely means that Siri ain’t gettin’ better anytime soon. Time to turn off “Hey, Siri.”

It’s also a chip in the Apple armor as the AI race heats up. Apple’s iPhone sales have been declining, so they’ve begun focusing on growing services revenue in recent years (i.e. mostly software bets like the app store, music, apple pay, etc.) This is where AI can make a huge impact, so their lack of AI chops could cost them in the long run if Google can do better.

Sorry Timmy, life’s tough when you always have to be the perfect child.

POLL OF THE WEEK

BITE SIZED TREATS

Ever feel like you and Alexa are speaking different languages? Well, rest easy buddy - Amazon is working on AI for Alexa to make it “the world’s best personal assistant.” Hope it lives up to the hype because our calendars need a little more personal assistance these days..

Jack Dorsey's Bluesky (decentralized version of Twitter) is popping off on the app store charts. It got 375K installs in the last week, even though it's still in beta and only has ~50K actual users.

If you’ve been with us for a minute, you’ll know that back in March, Balaji (ex-Coinbase CTO and partner at a16z) made two $1M bets that the US would enter hyperinflation and bitcoin’s price would get to $1M in 90 days. Well, it's been about a month, and this week he gave in and donated the $2M. Turns out, he did the whole bet as a stunt/PSA to warn us about the state of the economy.

Geoffrey Hinton, an award winning AI researcher known as the Godfather of AI just quit his job at Google after sharing fears of AI’s potential for harm. He's concerned about misinformation, fully autonomous weapons killing off humanity, and an AI arms race between all the huge tech co's. If the Godfather is worried... maybe we should be too? *shifts nervously*

Uber did a cheeky analysis of their lost and found. Most forgetful city? Jacksonville, FL. Weirdest thing someone left in an Uber? A Danny DeVito Christmas ornament. ‘Cause you know… who doesn’t carry around their favorite ornament during the holidays??
